Ditch and Switch Candles

I love a good scented candle just like the next girl, and you’re probably thinking well my parents did alright with candles and I turned out ok. I don’t know about you, but I’m not convinced we’re ok. I keep hearing about people in their 20s and 30s getting the dreaded C word. Is there a connection? Well I’m not a scientist or a doctor, but if taking a candle out of my home might help I’m going to do it. It’s something in my control and I’m going to take advantage of it.

Many of the popular candles these days are so harmful to our health. They are huge contributors to indoor air pollution and are considered as dangerous as second hand smoke. Candles contain toxic ingredients we do not want to breathe in! The wicks are made with heavy metals, causing our air to be full of heavy metal toxins. Often the wax is full of carcinogens and the toxins released from a burning candle are the same as those found in diesel fuel.

The smell comes from an artificial fragrance. Fragrance doesn’t just mean smell. Fragrance can be up to 3,000 different chemicals. And the company doesn’t have to tell you what they are because they are protected by trade secret. These chemicals found in candles have been linked to migraines, respiratory problems, neurological problems, reproductive problems, hormone disrupters, and more.

As a new mom of two some days I don’t even know if I brushed my teeth or not. I don’t need the extra responsibility of making sure the candles are blown out in the house. According to the National Fire Protection Association an estimated 8,200 home fires are started by candles every year. And those are just the ones reported, not ones people put out themselves with a home fire extinguisher. In addition to being a fire hazard, I personally don’t keep candles in my home because I don’t want one of my small children to accidentally touch it and burn themselves. Or knock it over and start a fire. And no mom shaming here friends, accidents happen no matter how careful we are!

Last but not least let’s talk cost! The cost of a medium size candle is $25 and it only burns for 65 hours. That is a lot of money for not a lot of use.

So ditch the candles and switch to diffusing essential oils! But why diffusing?

When we diffuse oils toxic chemicals are not being emitted into the air (unless you buy cheap oils filled with who knows what, hello Amazon and grocery store oils). With pure oils the diffuser lets out water vapor and oil. That is it. And the best part: you receive limitless benefits from these oils plus they make your home smell incredible without toxins/synthetic fragrance. I personally will only ever use Young Living oils in my home.

The oils that come in the starter kit give you 1200 drops of oil. Now let’s say you run your diffuser on the 4 hour setting, that means you will have 2200 hours of diffusing time! WOW! And over 500 diffusing sessions using only the 12 oils in your starter kit.

Remember that $25 candle we talked about? Here is a quick price comparison:

2200 hours of kit oils = $165

2200 hours of candles = $846

Which would you rather invest in? I know that safe and cost effective always wins for me and be my family! Plus, no fire hazard with oils. Still not convinced? Check out some of these awesome blends and then let me know when you’re ready to do the ditch and switch!
