Oils + Emotions

I am really excited to be hosting a live Q&A with Amanda Gambale this Sunday. We will talk all about how oils can help support our emotions and mental health. This blog post will touch on some of the topics in the Q&A.

Before we dive into the wonderful world of non-toxic living, we need to talk about what the essential oils are! Where do they come from and why do they matter in this conversation?

Essential oils are organic compounds extracted from plants that have therapeutic properties. They can be found in the plant’s flower, stem, leaves, bark or fruit. The chemistry is extremely complex and may consist of hundreds of different and unique chemical compounds. This is what gives each oil its unique attributes and characteristics.

The oils are also the "lifeblood" of a plant. They protect the plant from disease, provide nutrients and help fight off anything it doesn't want! It keeps the plant healthy and functioning at its best!

Essential oils should smell exactly like the plant they come from – nothing more, nothing less. Often, companies will add things like vanillin to make them smell sweeter. Do your oils smell like a plant or a dessert? If it says 100% pure but it smells sweet, chances are something else has been added. This means that the therapeutic properties are either decreased or nonexistent.

Anytime you hold a bottle of Young Living powerful essential oils, you are holding the pure essence of health-promoting botanicals that can be diffused, inhaled, applied topically, incorporated into massage, taken internally to inspire a positive emotional state, enhance your physical wellness, purify your home, refine your skin and create deep spiritual awareness.

Young Living Essential Oils can be applied directly to the skin - always remembering to check your labels for dilution instructions. Some oils need to be diluted with a carrier oil (coconut oil, grape-seed oil, organic olive oil, V6 oil, etc.) while others can be applied directly on the skin with no dilution (referred to as “neat.”)

Oils can also be inhaled directly from the bottle, or by using a diffuser. This is actually the quickest way for your body to use the oils. And your house will smell amazing. I like to drop valor on my palms, rub them together, put them to my mouth and nose and take a few big inhales!

Lastly, because of Young Living’s therapeutic grade of oils, there are many oils that can be taken internally as a dietary supplement. You can add oils to your water, or even into a capsule. The Vitality line (white label) is clearly labeled for this use.

The vast majority of essential oils on the market today are only suitable for cosmetics and perfumes. The reason Young Living’s oils are so different is their unmatched commitment to producing a pure, unadulterated oil. Young Living has a seed to seal promise. And it is unmatched. Every step from planting to bottling is detailed and controlled. I chose Young Living because of this process, after weeks of research.

But Young Living is more expensive, right? You’re right, often times it is and “you get what you pay for” has never been more true. Young Living is more expensive than other brands and oils you can find at Whole Foods or on Amazon because of its therapeutic grade.

So how do all of these oils work?

Did you know that essential oils can support our limbic system? The limbic system is kind of like the emotional command center in our brain. It’s responsible for emotional + behavioral responses and memory, and can be directly affected by the olfactory system. When our olfactory receptors are stimulated, they communicate with the limbic system and trigger a series of emotional and behavioral responses.

That’s where essential oils come in! Certain oils are helpful for different emotions. While they don’t take the external stressor away, they can help transform our response and memory associated with it when we inhale their scent. Isn’t that amazing?! So oil up, friends!

Let's talk about some specific oils that help support our mental health. There are several more, but I'm going to hit you with the basics.
